Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly leading the pack to sign Sporting Lisbon’s in-form striker, Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish international has been on fire since moving to Portugal in the summer of 2023, nearly averaging a goal per game and helping Sporting clinch the league title last season under Rúben Amorim.
This season, Gyökeres has kept up that momentum in both domestic and European competitions, recently shining in Sporting’s 4-1 win over Manchester City. With 23 goals in 17 games so far, he’s one of Europe’s hottest prospects, catching the eye of Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea, along with Barcelona and other top clubs.
While Gyökeres’ contract at Sporting has a hefty €100 million release clause, The Telegraph says Sporting might be open to negotiating a discount of up to £63 million next summer—a big drop from his original clause. This could make him a super attractive target, though Sporting will likely drive a hard bargain given his rising star and recent performances.

With rumors swirling about a potential move to Old Trafford, where his current manager Rúben Amorim is stepping in for the managerial role, Gyökeres might have a tough choice ahead. While teaming up with Amorim could be a plus, United’s recent struggles with big-name signings—like Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez—might give him pause. Chelsea also has a strong case, as they’re on the hunt for a reliable goal-scorer, but Stamford Bridge has seen its fair share of ups and downs with frequent managerial changes.
On top of that, Coventry City, Gyökeres’ former club, could cash in from any major transfer fee thanks to a sell-on clause in their original deal with Sporting. They stand to gain 10% of any profit Sporting makes over the initial €20 million transfer fee, meaning a potential €8 million payday if Gyökeres’ €100 million clause is triggered.
As Gyökeres continues to dazzle in the Portuguese league, Sporting stands to gain, whether from a boost to their title hopes or a nice transfer profit. United, Chelsea, and other suitors might soon find themselves in a heated race for his signature.
