Ruthless Reds Crush Spurs to Reach League Cup Final

Liverpool turned on the style at Anfield, tearing Tottenham apart to book their place in yet another League Cup final.
Liverpool crush Tottenham

Liverpool charged into their record-setting 15th League Cup final with a fierce 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, turning around a first-leg loss in style. Arne Slot’s team now gets to defend their title against Newcastle United at Wembley in March, keeping their hopes alive for back-to-back wins in the competition.

With Newcastle’s comeback against Arsenal fresh in their minds, Spurs thought they could hold onto their 1-0 lead. The visitors started strong, thanks to new signing Kevin Danso and a defense that had kept four clean sheets in their last eight games. But Liverpool wasn’t in the mood to wait. Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez both tested Antonín Kinský early, and Dominik Szoboszlai even scored, but the offside flag waved it off.

Spurs had a few chances on the break, but their luck ran out in the 34th minute. Salah made a beautiful cross that went past Núñez and landed perfectly for Cody Gakpo, who fired a first-time shot into the bottom corner to tie things up. Liverpool could smell victory and almost took the lead before halftime, with Salah’s powerful volley saved by Kinský’s amazing fingertip save onto the crossbar.

The attack kept coming right after the break. Just minutes in, Núñez was brought down in the box after nudging the ball past Kinský, and Salah stepped up to confidently score the penalty in the top corner. The hosts were now in full control, and a wave of attacks followed. Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch both hit the woodwork, with Gravenberch’s long shot hitting the post, before Conor Bradley set up Szoboszlai to calmly roll in a third goal.

Son Heung-min hit the bar with a rare chance for Spurs, but things got worse for Ange Postecoglou’s team as Virgil van Dijk soared high to head in Liverpool’s fourth from an Alexis Mac Allister corner. It was the final blow for Spurs, who saw their Wembley dreams crushed in a tough way.

Liverpool, the most successful team in League Cup history, will head back to the capital looking to lift the trophy in back-to-back seasons for the first time since their glory days in the early 1980s. As for Spurs, Postecoglou is feeling the heat, with their cup hopes now resting on strong runs in both the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League if he wants to keep faith in his long-term plan.
