West Ham forward Michail Antonio had a serious car accident on Saturday when his Ferrari spun out of control on a “very slippery” road in Essex during Storm Darragh. The 34-year-old reportedly broke his leg and was airlifted to a central London hospital, where he’s currently in stable condition.
The crash happened on Coppice Row in Theydon Bois around 12:50 pm. Witnesses said Antonio’s £260,000 Ferrari lost control because of the bad weather. One witness described it: “It was awful weather—rain, wind, and very slippery roads. It didn’t seem like another car was involved; it looked like it had spun out of control.”
Firefighters took 45 minutes to free Antonio from the wreckage after his car collided with a tree and got pretty banged up. Photos from the scene showed smoke coming from the right side of the vehicle.
After being rescued, Antonio was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition. His ex-wife, Debbie, rushed to his side to support him while doctors checked on his injuries. It’s believed he may have hurt both legs, with worries about a possible femur injury.
West Ham United confirmed the accident in a statement: “Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in Essex. Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital. We kindly ask for privacy for Michail and his family during this tough time. Further updates will follow.”
Essex Police are investigating and asking for dashcam footage from drivers in the area. Initial reports suggest it was a single-vehicle accident, and the Ferrari has been removed from the scene.
The crash adds to the chaos caused by Storm Darragh, which has been causing trouble across the UK with high winds, heavy rain, and dangerous driving conditions.

Antonio, West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 68 goals, has been a key player for the Hammers since joining in 2015. Despite his success on the field, he’s faced personal challenges in recent years, including a divorce that impacted his mental health.
In a candid interview earlier this year, Antonio shared that he sought therapy to handle the pressures of football and personal issues. At one point, he even admitted to praying for an injury to escape the stress.
This isn’t Antonio’s first car mishap. In December 2019, he famously crashed his Lamborghini into a family’s bin shed on Christmas Day while dressed as a snowman. Reflecting on that incident, he acknowledged his recklessness, saying, “It was a madness.”
The Hammers weren’t in action this weekend and are set to face Wolves on Monday evening. However, Antonio’s involvement is now off the table as he starts his recovery.
Fans and teammates are all hoping for his speedy recovery as he continues to be a vital part of West Ham, both on and off the field.
