Deeney Calls for Antony’s Exit After Frustrating Spurs Defeat

Frustration is bubbling at Old Trafford as Troy Deeney shares a harsh take on Antony’s performance in Manchester United’s wild 4-3 Carabao Cup loss to Spurs.

Manchester United’s loss to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup has stirred up some serious criticism. Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney is calling for the club to part ways with Brazilian winger Antony. The 4-3 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium showed off a bunch of weaknesses, and Antony’s performance really stood out for all the wrong reasons.

On CBS Sports, Deeney didn’t hold back about Antony’s poor showing. “As soon as Manchester United took Antony off, everyone else started running,” he said. “They’ve got to cut ties with him. I don’t want to make him the scapegoat, but honestly, watching him is so frustrating.”

Deeney’s tough words paint a bleak picture of Antony’s current form. “This is your big moment. He doesn’t run, he doesn’t sprint… just get him out. If you’re getting rid of Marcus Rashford, whoever wants him, we’ll pay you to take Antony too. Just get him out of the club,” Deeney added, stressing that United’s patience with him might be wearing thin.

The match itself was a wild ride. Spurs jumped to a strong 3-0 lead but almost let it slip away in a crazy second half. Deeney also slammed Tottenham for not keeping control, even with their early dominance. “Tottenham were so in control. Sixty minutes in, 3-0, and Manchester United had nothing,” he said. “They had to bring on three subs they probably didn’t even want to, and Tottenham were inviting pressure.”

Deeney pointed out Spurs’ defensive mess: “Going to your goalkeeper should mean coming out the other side of play. But instead, they took five, six, seven touches, tried to score, played with a high line, and invited pressure. Tottenham’s defenders were running forward. You learn that at four or five years old: no pressure on the ball, stop, back off, give them space. They do everything backwards.”

Despite Spurs’ late-game struggles, manager Ange Postecoglou stayed positive, praising his team’s grit in tough times. “We self-inflicted some pain on ourselves, but we ended up getting a fourth and winning the game,” Postecoglou said. “I still can’t get away from the fact this group of players is doing an unbelievable job.”

The Aussie manager talked about the challenges Spurs are facing, with lots of players out due to injuries or other reasons. “We had 10 players unavailable for one reason or another. We can’t rotate like other clubs. The current situation is incredible,” he explained. Responding to critiques of his tactics, Postecoglou joked: “I know the television studio is probably having a meltdown over my lack of tactics.”

For Manchester United, though, all eyes are on Antony. With more and more fans wanting him gone, the January transfer window could be a big turning point in his time at Old Trafford.
