Kevin De Bruyne has put the rumors about a rift with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to rest, revealing that a “mystery” sports hernia has kept him sidelined for most of the season. The Belgian playmaker, who has dealt with injuries in recent years, made a fantastic comeback during City’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a much-needed boost.
With just six starts this season, De Bruyne’s limited appearances sparked chatter about a falling-out with Guardiola. But the 33-year-old firmly denied any issues, saying his absence was all about injury struggles.
“It’s been an uncomfortable injury, a real puzzle,” De Bruyne told BBC Sport. “I’m getting better slowly. I managed to play a good amount of minutes without feeling bad. It’s a relief.”
He added, “I know there’s been a lot of talk. There have never been issues between me and Pep. He knows I’ve been dealing with this sports hernia. It’s painful and uncomfortable. I just want to be back on the pitch. Hopefully, I can get back to feeling good and then I’ll be fine.”

De Bruyne also shared his thoughts on the team’s recent rough patch, which included a six-game winless streak before their victory against Nottingham Forest. “It’s been a tough time. We haven’t been at our best. We’ve had injuries and other challenges, but today is hopefully the first step to turning things around.”
Guardiola echoed De Bruyne’s feelings, brushing off any talk of a falling-out and praising the midfielder’s performance.
“I’m so happy he’s back,” Guardiola said. “He played 75 fantastic minutes. He deserves the best because he’s a great guy and has been super important for us for so many years.”
City fans are hoping De Bruyne’s return is the turning point for their season. With the Premier League champions chasing the top spots, Guardiola’s squad will need their star player in top shape for the challenges ahead.
Next up, Manchester City heads to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace, where De Bruyne and the team will aim to build on their much-needed win.
