Aston Villa kept their dream run in the UEFA Champions League alive, beating Bologna 2-0 at Villa Park and staying perfect in the group stage. The vibe at Villa Park was electric, with fans buzzing for another unforgettable European night. Aston Villa kicked off strong, controlling the game and setting the pace. Ian Maatsen, playing an advanced role on the left, was a constant thorn in Bologna’s side, keeping Riccardo Orsolini busy with defensive duties. Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers was a dynamo in midfield, threading passes and gliding past defenders, showing just how important he’s becoming in Unai Emery’s squad.

Even with Villa dominating, they struggled to create clear chances in the first half. Their best shot came from a set-piece when Jhon Durán connected with a well-placed corner, but Bologna’s goalkeeper, Łukasz Skorupski, made a fantastic save, palming the ball away in a crowded penalty area. Villa kept the pressure on Bologna, searching for that breakthrough.

Bologna, trying to find their form from last season, defended well but still posed some danger on the counter. Thijs Dallinga was particularly lively for the visitors, forcing a save from Emiliano Martínez after a slick move with Dan Ndoye. Later, Dallinga had a golden chance when Leon Bailey’s misplaced pass fell to him, but he shot wide from the edge of the box.

The second half saw Aston Villa come back with fresh energy. Just minutes in, Leon Bailey nearly broke the deadlock with a half-volley that went just wide. Bologna had a chance too, with Stefan Posch finding space on the edge of Villa’s box, but his shot missed the target.

Things changed in the 55th minute when Villa earned a free-kick on the right wing. John McGinn swung the ball into the box, and in a surprising twist, it evaded everyone, including Skorupski, and found the far corner of the net. The goal sent Villa Park into a frenzy, while Bologna’s players were left fuming, believing they should’ve had a free-kick in the build-up. The referee waved off their protests, and Villa was up 1-0.

Riding high on that goal, Villa pushed for a second to seal the deal. Just 10 minutes after McGinn’s opener, they struck again with a beautiful goal. It all started with a brilliant diagonal ball from center-back Diego Carlos that caught Bologna’s defense off guard. Morgan Rogers sprinted down the left and delivered a perfect low cross to Durán, who calmly slotted it past Skorupski to make it 2-0.

The second goal took the wind out of Bologna’s sails, and they struggled to create any serious threats in the final minutes. Despite making a few attacking changes, they couldn’t break through Villa’s solid defense, with Emiliano Martínez commanding his area like a boss. Villa, on the other hand, managed the game with poise, keeping their shape and denying Bologna any real chances to get back in it.

As the final whistle blew, Villa Park erupted in cheers, celebrating another fantastic European night. This victory kept Villa’s perfect start to their UCL campaign intact, with nine points from three games and no goals conceded.

With their strong form in both the Premier League and Champions League, Villa is becoming a team to watch out for across Europe. Their solid defense and attacking flair make them serious contenders to go deep in the tournament. For now, though, they’re focused on keeping up their momentum and continuing this impressive run, as the dream of European glory feels more real with every match.
