Arsenal put on an amazing show, crushing Sporting CP 5-1 in Lisbon! This was Sporting’s first loss since Ruben Amorim left, and it also ended their nine-game home winning streak in the UEFA Champions League. The Gunners looked like a team ready to chase European glory.
Right from the start, Arsenal took charge, quieting the usually loud Estadio José Alvalade crowd. Gabriel Martinelli kicked things off by scoring in just the seventh minute, finishing off a great cross from Jurriën Timber after some slick passing. Arsenal’s second goal was just as nice, with Bukayo Saka’s hard work leading to a loose ball that Kai Havertz grabbed to make it 2-0. Sporting’s only highlight in the first half was a powerful shot from Geovany Quenda, which David Raya saved brilliantly. Just before half-time, Gabriel Magalhães headed in a corner from Declan Rice, pretty much sealing the game.

Sporting tried to get back in it early in the second half. Gonçalo Inácio scored from close range after a corner from Francisco Trincão, keeping their streak of scoring in 56 home matches alive. But their hope didn’t last long. A messy challenge from Ousmane Diomande on Martin Ødegaard led to a penalty, which Saka coolly converted.
Even though Sporting had a few chances, like shots from Morten Hjulmand and Viktor Gyökeres, Arsenal stayed in control. Leandro Trossard finished things off with a close-range header, and Raya made a fantastic save off the bar to deny Gyökeres a late goal.
This win showed that Arsenal is getting stronger in Europe, ending a five-match winless streak away in the competition and keeping their unbeaten record against Sporting at seven games. For Sporting, this tough loss is a big wake-up call for the challenges ahead in their post-Amorim journey.
