Wolves have just announced that they’ve brought in former Porto boss Vitor Pereira as their new head coach! The Portuguese manager is joining from Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab on an 18-month deal, with Wolves paying around £825,000 for his services.

Pereira steps in for Gary O’Neil, who was let go after Wolves’ 2-1 loss to Ipswich left them sitting second-bottom in the Premier League. With only two wins from 16 league games this season, the club’s seven-year stay in the top flight is on shaky ground.

At 56, Pereira has a ton of experience under his belt, having won back-to-back Primeira Liga titles with Porto in 2012 and 2013 and snagging the Greek Super League trophy with Olympiakos in 2015. He was managing Al-Shabab since February, leaving them in sixth place in the Saudi Pro League.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi is excited about Pereira’s track record and believes he can help the team turn things around. “Vitor is a highly respected and experienced coach who has achieved success across different leagues and will bring a fresh approach for the challenge ahead,” Shi said. “This is a tough moment for the club, but we have full confidence in his ability to guide us back on track.”

Pereira took charge of Wolves’ training for the first time on Thursday, just in time for a crucial relegation clash against Leicester City on Sunday. Wolves, currently 19th in the table, are five points behind Leicester, who are just outside the relegation zone.

While Wolves looked at a few candidates for the role, including former West Ham boss David Moyes, Pereira quickly became the top pick thanks to his tactical know-how and knack for delivering results under pressure.

Gary O’Neil’s short stint at Molineux, which started in August 2023, saw the team rack up 11 defeats in 16 matches. Despite wins against Southampton and Fulham, Wolves have struggled to find their groove, putting their Premier League status at risk.

Pereira’s main goal will be to stabilize the team and spark a fighting spirit to climb out of the relegation zone. Sunday’s game against Leicester will kick off his mission to rescue Wolves and reignite their hopes of survival.
