Manchester United pulled off an incredible late comeback to beat Premier League champs Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Two goals in the final minutes turned the game around for the Red Devils, leaving Pep Guardiola’s squad reeling and stuck with just one win in their last 11 matches across all competitions.

A Battle of Struggles

Both teams came into the derby looking for answers amid shaky form, and the nervous vibe at the Etihad was clear from the start. United’s hopes took a hit early on when Mason Mount had to leave due to injury, while City struggled to break through United’s solid defense.

It took over 20 minutes for the first chance to appear, with Phil Foden’s volley going harmlessly wide. Frustration grew among City fans as United started to find their rhythm, but United’s lack of sharpness mirrored their past struggles. Manuel Ugarte’s wild shot over the bar was their only real effort before City struck just before halftime.

City Strike First

City’s breakthrough came from a well-executed set piece—something United have had trouble defending all season. Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected corner found Joško Gvardiol wide open, and the Croatian made no mistake, heading it past André Onana to give City a deserved 1-0 lead.

Despite their efforts, United didn’t manage a shot on target in the first half—a sign of their disjointed attack.

Amad Sparks a Late Revival

In the second half, United fought to get back in the game, with Amad Diallo shining as their most lively player. The Ivorian forced Ederson into action with a powerful header, and Rasmus Højlund came agonizingly close to equalizing after setting up Bruno Fernandes, who unfortunately sent his chipped effort wide.

United’s frustration grew when Højlund’s penalty shout—after being taken down by Rúben Dias—was ignored.

But United’s persistence paid off in the thrilling final minutes. A terrible backpass from Matheus Nunes gave Amad the chance to pounce. Nunes fouled the United winger in the box, and this time Fernandes nailed the penalty, sending Ederson the wrong way to level the score.

As the Etihad crowd watched in stunned silence, United struck again in the dying seconds. Lisandro Martínez delivered a perfect ball over City’s defense, and Amad calmly took it around Ederson before slotting it home, sending the traveling United fans into a frenzy.

City Stumble, United March On

This late collapse handed United a memorable derby win while piling more pressure on Pep Guardiola. City’s title defense looks shaky, now sitting nine points off the top of the table. Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s United will hope this thrilling result sparks a comeback as they continue their climb up the standings.
