Manchester United’s new chapter with Ruben Amorim is already shaking things up at Old Trafford. But not every change has been a hit with the fans.
The biggest change so far? The exit of interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy. Amorim brought in five trusted staff from Sporting Lisbon, which meant Van Nistelrooy was let go. But one guy who stuck around is Darren Fletcher.
Fletcher, a true United legend with 342 games under his belt, has done a bunch of different jobs at the club, including technical director. Earlier this year, he moved to the coaching team, acting as a link between the first team and the academy. While his long history with the club is clear, not everyone is on board with him staying.
One player who’s all about Fletcher is new signing Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan midfielder, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, praised Fletcher for helping keep Manchester United’s spirit alive.

“We all know what it means to be United, with the history we have,” Ugarte said in a recent chat. “When you’re with people who are part of that history, like Darren Fletcher, they show you what it means to be United. It’s about the history, the fans, the mystique, and being 100% focused on winning trophies.”
Ugarte, who shined under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, is super excited to team up with the Portuguese coach again. Looking back on his time in Lisbon, Ugarte said, “Sporting was one of the biggest clubs in Portugal, and I spent nearly three years there. Ruben Amorim is an amazing coach who helped me grow as a player. I can’t wait to work with him again at a club as big as United.”
The early days of Amorim’s time at the club show he wants to mix new ideas with the rich traditions of Manchester United. Fletcher’s ongoing role could be key in keeping that balance, even if fans have mixed feelings.
