Russell Martin delivered a scathing assessment of his team following their 3-1 loss to Bournemouth, accusing his players of showing a “ridiculous” lack of fight and courage during a dismal first-half performance. The South Coast derby saw Bournemouth take complete control early on, with goals from Evanilson, Dango Ouattara, and Antoine Semenyo putting the Cherries 3-0 up by halftime. Southampton struggled to respond, only managing a late consolation goal through Taylor Harwood-Bellis in the second half.
After a bright start, Southampton’s collapse began in the 17th minute with Evanilson’s opener, and the visitors never really recovered. Speaking after the match, Martin was visibly frustrated, pointing out his team’s inability to respond to adversity. “Whatever personnel you have on the pitch, whatever way you play, if you lack the fight and aggression and spirit and togetherness and courage that we lacked in the first half, you’re going to have a big, big problem,” he said. He took responsibility for the performance, adding, “Obviously I haven’t given the team enough in terms of mentality and character and fight and resilience… but the team hasn’t got it tonight, so that’s my fault, not theirs.”
Martin was particularly irritated by the team’s reaction to conceding the first goal, criticizing their mentality. He highlighted the disparity in fouls between the two sides as a symbol of his team’s lack of tenacity. “Bournemouth make 20 fouls, we make 10, I think that sums up the whole game. It’s impossible if you’re not going to fight,” he said.
Despite a bit of a bounce-back in the second half, Martin stressed that the team’s effort after the break wasn’t enough to excuse their earlier collapse. “I thanked them for running and fighting in the second half, and actually, I don’t think you should ever thank them for that, that should be the bare minimum,” he added.
The result leaves Southampton still without a win in their return to the Premier League, with just one point from six games and a winless streak stretching back 19 matches across two seasons.
