Graham Potter is back in action as West Ham United’s new manager! After a 20-month break from top-flight football, the 49-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal following Julen Lopetegui’s departure. He’s on a mission to steer the Hammers away from relegation trouble.
Potter takes over a team sitting 14th in the Premier League, seven points clear of the drop zone. Chatting with the press, the former Chelsea and Brighton manager couldn’t hide his excitement, calling it “a proud day” and comparing the buzz to “Christmas for adults.”
Potter’s last gig at Chelsea didn’t go as planned; he was let go in April 2023 after just seven months. Despite a record-breaking £323m spending spree, the results just didn’t come, with the Blues facing 11 defeats in 31 games.
Looking back on his Chelsea days, Potter said, “I think I’m a better person and a better coach for the experience. In professional sport, you’ve always got something to prove—it drives you forward.”
He mentioned that his time away from the dugout helped him evaluate his options, and he felt West Ham was the perfect match because of their passionate fans, rich history, and high expectations.
Potter stressed the importance of building a team that fans can connect with: “If you can build a team that the supporters identify with, are proud of, and enjoy watching, that’s the key.”
He also believes in creating trust and alignment between players, staff, and fans as crucial for long-term success.

Joining Potter is a solid backroom team, including Narcis Pelach as first-team coach, Bruno Saltor as assistant coach, and Billy Reid as first-team coach. Together, they’re ready to revitalize the squad and boost performances.
Potter’s first challenge will be an FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa on Friday, followed by a Premier League home game against Fulham next Tuesday.
Before Chelsea, Potter made waves at Brighton, turning the Seagulls into a competitive Premier League team and achieving their highest-ever finish of ninth. His managerial journey kicked off with Swedish club Östersunds FK, where he gained international fame for leading the team to the UEFA Europa League knockout stages.
Though he was previously linked to the England managerial job, he’s all in for club football, saying, “Club football is more rewarding than international management.”
West Ham fans are hoping Potter’s tactical skills and calm leadership will breathe new life into their season and bring some stability to the London Stadium.
