Pickford’s Penalty Heroics Deny as Everton Hold Newcastle

Anthony Gordon’s return to Goodison Park saw him miss a crucial penalty as Everton and Newcastle United battled to a 0-0 draw in the Premier League. This result means Everton have collected more home points than any other side since April, highlighting their growing resilience at Goodison, while Newcastle’s struggles on the road persist.

The match started with Everton looking to build on their recent victory over Crystal Palace, while Newcastle sought to strengthen their position near the top of the table. The Toffees showed early promise, but it was Newcastle who had the first major chance when Bruno Guimarães’ effort was accidentally blocked by Iliman Ndiaye, who appeared unaware of the danger. Everton responded with Abdoulaye Doucouré nodding in a cross from James Garner, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The turning point came just after the half-hour mark when James Tarkowski was penalized for hauling down Sandro Tonali inside the box after a lengthy VAR review. Gordon, the former Everton star, stepped up to take the penalty, only to see his effort saved by Jordan Pickford, who hadn’t saved a spot-kick in nine previous attempts. The Gwladys Street End erupted in cheers, and Gordon’s return was far from the homecoming he had hoped for.

Newcastle dominated possession for large periods of the game, but their attacking moves lacked cutting edge, with Gordon providing energy but little in terms of final product. Everton, meanwhile, looked increasingly dangerous on the break, and as the game wore on, they created the best chance of the second half. Dwight McNeil’s perfectly weighted pass found Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box, but Nick Pope denied him with a sharp low save. Moments later, Dan Burn appeared to foul Calvert-Lewin, and Idrissa Gueye smashed the follow-up over the bar.

As the game neared its end, both sides pushed for a winner, but neither could find the quality required to break the deadlock. Sean Dyche will be pleased with Everton’s newfound resilience, especially after a poor start to the season. Five points from their last three games signal an improvement, leaving them in 16th place. For Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, however, their inability to win away from home continues to be a cause for concern. One win from five away fixtures in 90 minutes leaves them in sixth place, but their road form must improve if they are to stay in the European places.

In the end, a draw seemed a fair result, but both sides will feel they missed opportunities to claim all three points. Everton’s steady climb up the table continues, while Newcastle’s pursuit of Champions League football is threatened by their inconsistent performances away from St James’ Park.
