Manchester United’s nightmare Premier League season hit a new low with a fifth league defeat this month, falling 2-0 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are now stuck in 14th place, while Eddie Howe’s squad is climbing high, landing in fifth.

Ruben Amorim’s short stint as United manager is quickly unraveling, with five losses in his first 10 league games. Just four minutes in, Alexander Isak’s glancing header from Lewis Hall’s perfect cross put Newcastle on the board. The Swedish striker made history, becoming the second Newcastle player to score in six straight PL games, matching Papiss Cissé’s 2012 record.

The Magpies, full of confidence, kept the pressure on United’s shaky defense. Joelinton and Anthony Gordon both had chances before Gordon, in fantastic form, set up Joelinton for Newcastle’s second. The Brazilian’s powerful header left André Onana with no chance, doubling the visitors’ lead and leaving Old Trafford in stunned silence.

Newcastle could have added more before halftime. Isak thought he had a second when he slotted home after Fabian Schär’s deflected shot, but the offside flag waved him off. Moments later, Sandro Tonali hit the post from close range, while United’s rare attacks came from Rasmus Højlund’s wayward strike and Casemiro’s curling effort that drifted wide.

The second half saw a slightly more determined United, but the damage was already done. Harry Maguire nearly sparked a comeback with a header from Diogo Dalot’s delivery that hit the post. Leny Yoro, another bright spot, missed a golden chance when he headed wide from a Christian Eriksen corner. However, Newcastle’s defense, led brilliantly by Schär, stayed mostly untroubled as they cruised to victory.

This win marked Newcastle’s fourth straight top-flight victory without conceding – a feat they last achieved in 2012. Howe’s men are now just three points off the Champions League spots. For United, though, things are looking grim. A third straight home league defeat – something they haven’t faced since 1979 – raises serious questions about Amorim’s leadership and the squad’s abilities. With a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool coming up, the Red Devils’ season is already on the edge of collapse.
