Liverpool Stun City at the Etihad to Tighten Grip on Title Race

Arne Slot’s team walked into the Etihad with history against them but left with a big win that could define their season.
Liverpool vs. Man City

Liverpool took a big step towards their long-awaited 20th English top-flight title with a solid 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad, creating an 11-point gap at the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal’s slip against West Ham had already sparked some excitement in Merseyside, but Arne Slot’s team knew they had to put in the work on the pitch—especially at a place where they haven’t had much luck. But this isn’t the unstoppable City of the past, and Liverpool quickly showed who was boss. Just 15 minutes in, Dominik Szoboszlai flicked in a corner from Alexis Mac Allister, setting up Mohamed Salah to score with a little help from Nathan Aké. Cue the wild celebrations in the away end!

City, shocked but not out, thought they had equalized when Omar Marmoush scored after a clever pass from Phil Foden, but the flag went up and their joy was cut short. Liverpool, however, were quick on the counter, and they doubled their lead before half-time. Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a perfect ball to Salah on the right, who squared it for Szoboszlai to finish with style.

City has come back from two goals down before—twice winning 4-2 in the last three seasons. But this time, there was no comeback. Liverpool almost made it three when Curtis Jones tapped in from close range, but VAR had other ideas. Luis Díaz also had a curling shot expertly saved by Ederson. Meanwhile, Guardiola’s side struggled in the Manchester rain, with every missed touch and bad pass making it a night to forget.

As the final whistle blew, only the traveling Kop could be heard, singing for a team that now has its biggest lead over Arsenal in second place. After already beating City twice this season, Liverpool’s momentum is strong. With a League Cup final and a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain coming up, the dream of a truly special season is alive and kicking. For City, the title race is done—now it’s all about saving face in the FA Cup and aiming for a top-four finish.
