Liverpool Edges Past Wolves to Keep Title Charge on Track

Liverpool’s title charge continues, but Wolves made them sweat after a tense second-half twist.

Liverpool took another big step in their Premier League title chase with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers—marking their 16th victory in the last 17 matchups between the two teams.

With a comfy lead at the top, the Reds could have relaxed a bit, but there was no room for that at Anfield. Right from the start, Jürgen Klopp’s squad looked sharp, creating an early chance when former Wolves player Diogo Jota volleyed just wide after a slick play with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. The breakthrough came soon after, as a miscleared ball from Toti Gomes fell perfectly for Luis Díaz, who bundled it home in a quirky way.

Díaz was a constant threat and almost doubled Liverpool’s lead moments later, setting up Jota, but Emmanuel Agbadou made a fantastic last-minute block. The Reds dominated the first half, keeping Wolves under pressure, and their hard work paid off just before halftime. A clumsy challenge from José Sá on the speedy Díaz gave Mohamed Salah a chance to score from the penalty spot, and he nailed it. Wolves didn’t have much to show, with Matheus Cunha’s curling free-kick just inches wide before the break.

To their credit, Wolves came out with more energy in the second half and should have scored when Marshall Munetsi broke free, but Alisson stood strong. Liverpool thought they had sealed the game when Alexander-Arnold’s perfect pass set up Salah for another goal, but the offside flag dashed their hopes.

Then came some drama as Simon Hooper first pointed to the penalty spot when Jota went down after a wild challenge from Agbadou, but he changed his mind after checking the monitor. This gave Wolves a lifeline, and they took advantage when Cunha curled a stunning shot into the top corner, leaving the Kop in shock.

From there, it was a tense finish for Liverpool, who had an unusually shaky second half. But despite Wolves’ late push, the Reds held on to grab three crucial points, keeping their seven-point lead at the top. For Wolves, the loss was expected, but with the relegation battle heating up, every point lost feels more painful.
