Liverpool Close 2024 in Style with a 5-0 Masterclass

Five-star Liverpool lit up the London Stadium with a dazzling display, extending their unbeaten run and proving why they’re favourites for the Premier League crown.
Liverpool vs. West Ham

Liverpool put on an amazing show to wrap up 2024, smashing West Ham United 5-0 at the London Stadium. This win stretched their unbeaten streak to 23 matches in all competitions and boosted their lead at the top of the Premier League to a solid eight points.

The Hammers, who were unbeaten in their last four games and enjoying their best run under Julen Lopetegui, were left scrambling as Liverpool took control right from the start. Alphonse Areola made some fantastic saves early on, keeping out shots from Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones, and Luis Díaz. But after 30 minutes, Díaz took advantage of a lucky deflection from Vladimír Coufal to score at the near post.

West Ham fans held onto a glimmer of hope, thinking they could exploit Liverpool’s recent defensive slips, especially since the Reds had conceded two or more goals in their last four away games. Mohammed Kudus almost made that hope a reality, hitting the post with a long-range shot just after Joe Gomez went off injured. But Liverpool quickly struck back. Salah dazzled everyone with his skills, slipping past Konstantinos Mavropanos and sending a perfect pass through Max Kilman’s legs to Cody Gakpo, who easily doubled the lead. Salah then scored a third just before halftime, beating Areola at his near post for his 20th goal of the season.

With eight goals and assists in the same Premier League match this season – a record – Salah was on fire. He kept troubling the Hammers after the break, breaking through on goal just minutes into the second half. Areola stopped him from getting a second, but there was no stopping Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose deflected shot from distance left the keeper with no chance, making it 4-0.

Liverpool was so dominant that manager Arne Slot could rest key players like Ryan Gravenberch and Gakpo ahead of their big match against Manchester United. The substitutes kept the pressure on, with Diogo Jota scoring a fifth late in the game to finish off a strong performance.

This 15th win in their last 19 meetings with West Ham showed Liverpool’s championship potential and set the stage for an exciting clash against United. For West Ham, it was a tough loss, but Lopetegui’s squad will look to bounce back quickly after what has been a solid run.
