Forest shock City with late winner at the City Ground

Nottingham Forest keeps their Champions League dreams alive with a thrilling 1-0 win over Manchester City!
Man City

Nottingham Forest stunned Manchester City with a dramatic late goal, securing a 1-0 victory in the Premier League (PL) at the City Ground.

Forest, firmly in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League spot, continued their impressive campaign — a season defined by their ability to succeed despite averaging the league’s lowest possession. Coming into the match just a point ahead of City, they once again showed their defensive steel and tactical discipline.

City, as expected, dominated possession from the start. Erling Haaland saw an early effort deflected wide, while Nico González came closest for the hosts, rattling the outside of the post with a long-range strike. However, neither side could break the deadlock before halftime, with Forest maintaining their record as the only PL home team yet to trail at the interval this season.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with City probing but lacking a cutting edge. The momentum briefly swung Forest’s way in the 67th minute when Callum Hudson-Odoi was denied by Ederson’s quick reactions and the inside of the post. Pep Guardiola looked to his bench for inspiration, bringing on Kevin De Bruyne and Omar Marmoush, but neither could find a way past Matz Sels in the Forest goal.

Just when the game seemed destined for a stalemate, Morgan Gibbs-White produced a moment of magic, delivering a raking pass to Hudson-Odoi. The winger drove into the box, shifted the ball onto his right foot, and lashed a powerful strike past Ederson at his near post. City’s desperate attempts to respond fell short, with Mateo Kovačić coming closest as his fierce volley flashed narrowly wide.

The victory marks Forest’s first league triumph over City since December 1997 (D2, L7), keeping Nuno Espírito Santo’s side third in the table — a position they’ve held throughout 2025. Meanwhile, the pressure mounts on City, who could slip out of the Champions League qualification spots if Chelsea defeat Leicester City on Sunday.

With Forest’s Champions League dream alive and City’s season on shaky ground, the battle for the top four just got even more intense.
