City’s Unbeaten Home Streak Ends in Shocking Spurs Win

Manchester City’s 52-game unbeaten home run is over after a shocking 4-0 loss to Tottenham.

Manchester City’s incredible 52-game unbeaten run at the Etihad Stadium came to a surprising halt as Tottenham Hotspur cruised to a 4-0 victory. Pep Guardiola’s squad is now feeling the heat after suffering an unexpected fifth straight loss in all competitions, a big turnaround for the reigning Premier League champs.

City, eager to bounce back from back-to-back Premier League losses to Bournemouth and Brighton, started strong, with Guglielmo Vicario making an early save against Erling Haaland. But Spurs, fresh off their own surprising 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town, quickly took charge. Birthday boy James Maddison kicked things off with a stunning volley from Dejan Kulusevski’s perfect cross, leaving the home crowd in shock.

Falling behind early wasn’t new for City, who had trailed in five of their six home league games this season. But Tottenham doubled their lead just seven minutes later, raising real concerns for Guardiola. Maddison, shining as the creative spark, linked up with Son Heung-min for a neat one-two before delicately finishing over Ederson for his second goal.

City tried to fight back, but Spurs’ makeshift defense of Radu Drăgușin and Ben Davies held strong. Haaland and Phil Foden came close before halftime, but the visitors went into the break with their two-goal lead intact.

Things got worse for City right after the restart. Former City defender Pedro Porro, who didn’t make much of an impact during his time at the Etihad, came back to haunt his old team. He connected with Dominic Solanke’s clever cut-back and fired in Tottenham’s third, leaving City with a steep hill to climb. Haaland hit the crossbar moments later, and Joško Gvardiol had a low shot heroically blocked by Porro as City’s frustration mounted.

The absence of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri was felt, as Tottenham kept exploiting City’s defensive weaknesses on the counter. Kulusevski nearly added a fourth before Guardiola brought in Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish in a last-ditch effort to turn things around. But Spurs weren’t done yet. In stoppage time, substitutes Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson teamed up to deliver the final blow, with Johnson scoring the fourth to seal a historic win for the visitors.

This victory lifts Tottenham to sixth in the Premier League table, reigniting their European hopes after a rocky start to the season. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s troubles deepen. Their unbeaten home run, which stretched back to November 2022 is over, and they now sit five points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played one more game.

Guardiola has a big job ahead to turn things around, starting with a potentially season-defining match at Anfield next weekend.
