Ruben Amorim has admitted that his job as Manchester United head coach might be in jeopardy after a rough start at Old Trafford.
Amorim, who joined just two months ago in a £9.2 million deal from Sporting Lisbon, has seen results take a nosedive. United is currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, having lost five of his first ten games.
Ahead of their match against Newcastle on Monday, Amorim acknowledged the cutthroat nature of football management.
“The manager of Manchester United can never be comfortable,” said the 39-year-old. “I know if we don’t win, I’m in trouble. That’s the job, and I’m okay with it. But we need to hang in there long enough to turn things around.”
He shared that he had hoped to take over next summer, with a full preseason to implement his ideas, but the club wanted him in mid-season.
United’s current slump has made things even more tense, especially after the recent firing of sporting director Dan Ashworth, who lasted just 159 days.
Amorim also talked about the challenges of taking over a struggling squad mid-season, saying, “I knew it would be tough, but I didn’t expect to lose this many games. Confidence is low, and when you can’t get your ideas across to the players, it’s really hard. We need results to build trust.”

The match against Newcastle will really test Amorim’s tactical skills, as some key players will be missing. Captain Bruno Fernandes is suspended after a red card against Wolves, and midfielder Manuel Ugarte is out after picking up his fifth yellow card.
Amorim hinted that Harry Maguire might get the captaincy back, even though he was stripped of it by the previous manager, Erik ten Hag. He praised Maguire’s professionalism: “Harry is focused, works hard, and doesn’t make excuses, even in tough times. He’s ready to help the team.”
United fans are craving some stability after a season filled with chaos on and off the pitch. Monday’s game comes with rumors of more squad changes, as January signings seem unlikely while the club focuses on balancing its finances.
Amorim’s immediate goal is to avoid a fourth straight defeat and give fans a glimmer of hope. The next few matches could shape both his future and United’s season.
